In spring it is common to see Queen Bees zig zagging at ground level in search of nest sites.

To attract a queen to your garden, you need to have a good supply of food so she can produce her first batch of eggs. See our Potting Shed Section for Seeds for Bees.

Choose a quiet shaded area of the garden for your nest box - a little morning sun to warm things up is fine. The left hand chamber is where the bees will defecate so adding a layer of cardboard will help to soak up the moisture. They will also build up their defences in this first chamber to protect the nest next door. Queen Bees are attracted to old mouse nests, so adding some mouse bedding or droppings to the second chamber will increase your chances of attracting your Queen. Litter or wood fibre are also suitable bedding materials. Place on a slab or waterproof material at ground level
