House Sparrows feed and nest near people in both urban and rural settings. However, they are in trouble and their numbers have significantly dropped in the UK, especially England. Siting a nest box, or several together (they like having friends living next door), will help to increase their numbers. Place your nest box at least 2 metres above ground, preferably by the eaves of your house. If you site them on the North to East sides of your house they will have shelter from both the hot sun and the wind.

Sparrows start looking for new homes in spring. You can encourage them into your garden by making sure you have seed bearing plants and an abundant supply of insects in your garden. If you do not have a garden then put out mealworms, these are a great source of energy for House sparrow Chicks. The adults also need plenty of seeds to keep their strength up.
